100th Ton not a distraction – Tendulkar

His worshippers across the world refer to him as ‘God’, and they’ve all been waiting with bated breath for him to score the elusive 100th century, no prizes for guessing, we are indeed talking about the ‘Little Master’ Sachin Tendulkar. On the contrary, the great man says he would just prefer to enjoy the game rather than being weighed down by all the hype.

“Well, it is easier said than done. It is just a number. But yes, I mean, there has been lot of hype around that and I want to enjoy cricket and I think that is important,” Tendulkar told a news channel. The legendary batsman went on to add “In the series, obviously focus would be on enjoying cricket and winning,”

Tendulkar scored his last international hundred about 300 days back against South Africa at Nagpur during a World Cup game. His last test hundred also came against the same opposition at Cape Town in January.

India is currently touring down under in Australia, where, they are currently 1-0 down and the second test weighing heavily in favor of the hosts.

Taking about preparing before each game, he said, “I just pack my bags on the eve of the match. For me, the preparation starts may be a week before the game, if there is not much time between the matches, then you equally need to switch off and switch on before the game. So it depends on the time I have before a game,”

The man who holds almost every possible batting record has found it hard to get to this milestone and get the monkey off the back, which he hopes to correct when he goes out to bat for the 2nd innings at his favorite venue; the Sydney Cricket Ground.

More than all the records and the accolades that he’s achieved over the years, it’s his boyish charm and child-like enthusiasm for the game that keeps him going even after 22 years at the top level.

“I don’t remember picking up a cricket bat the first time. I must have been 4 or 5 years old, like just any other child in India”, Tendulkar said.

He admitted that seeing his name in the papers after scoring runs in school cricket made an everlasting impression on him. “When I saw that, it changed everything. The first hundred that I scored changed everything and I would say that phase was the most defining moment of my life.”
