Five Tips For Getting Your Children Excited to Learn

Want to get your children excited about learning but don’t know how? Here are five tips that will help.

1- Hands on learning is fun and exciting.

Explore the vast outdoors. Have the child gather samples of water in different ponds and view them through a dual power stereo microscope. What is that squiggling under your eye? Collect rock and soil samples from a hike. Don’t forget leaves and worms. When a child shows interest in a craft, sport or even a musical instrument, be sure to support them the best you can. I enjoyed yarn crafts as a child, and learned to crochet and knit with my grandmothers help.

2- Children learn by example, so open a book and disappear into another place and time.

Dr. Seuss wrote, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn the more places you’ll go.” Use this to stimulate your child to read. Even children too young to read will enjoy looking and learning from picture books.

Redefining Online Education

One of the hottest topics in education is the rise of online learning and the controversy surrounding the massively open online courses known as MOOCs. It all started when instructors from several elite universities posted videos of their lectures for free online. They quickly discovered that this allowed them to reach a much wider audience. These free online classes differed from traditional courses in that they had the ability to support enormous class sizes but offered no course credits for students. Startups like Coursera, which was launched by two Stanford University computer science professors, soon began to offer hundreds of free MOOCs.

The Problem with MOOCs

One year later, millions of students worldwide had signed up for MOOCs. Despite high enrollment, Coursera and similar companies like edX and Udacity have found that offering free university courses is not a sustainable business model. Because so many students sign up for each class, there is little accountability for students and many students end up dropping out or failing the class altogether. Another problem with MOOCs is that many students want to earn academic credit for online courses that can be applied to a degree. After all, you can’t very well complete an MBA or other career-enhancing degree by taking MOOCs.

A viable solution for both students and MOOC providers is to allow students to view lectures online as a homework assignment and then come into class to engage with their instructors, have their coursework assessed and receive credit for their work. This solution is frequently referred to as the “flipped classroom” since students view lectures outside of class and then meet with their instructor in a classroom setting to discuss assignments instead of the other way around. In exchange for their instructor’s time and attention, students pay tuition in this scenario.

Private Tutoring Agency calls for Industry Regulation

With over 500 private tuition agencies now operating throughout the UK, some with over 10,000 private tutors on their book, London based private tutoring agency, Tutor House (www.tutorhouse.co.uk) has called for a governing body to mediate and regulate the private tuition industry.

In 2009, The Guardian reported that 45% of UK pupils based in London have had a private tutor; and since then that figure has increased substantially.

A staggering 72% of all children preparing for Common Entrance have had a private tutors according to the IOE, with 25% of all 11 – 18 year olds having had private tuition at some point, mainly in Mathematics, reports TES.

Managing Director of Tutor House, Alex Dyer said, ‘With the rise of University tuition fees a few years ago, and the surge in fierce competition and pressure to get into good schools – the demand for private tuition in the UK has increased yearly.

‘With such a sharp increase in demand for educational support, many agencies and freelance private tutors have been able to charge above an ethical price for private tuition’.

A period of transition with Computer Science as a Major at Stanford

Stanford University one of the premier centers for higher learning and research in the field of global education is showing the way about how the era’s culture and history has been changing. There is a massive change in the majors that were studied by the students during 1955 and today. During the periods of 1955 and 1965 there was a time when any graduate opting for liberal arts as a major landed to work in a business. At that time history was the most popular major with Political Science and Economics following behind.

The period of 75’s saw the emergence of Psychology that ruled as major. The emergence of Ronald Regan as the President of United States of America led the popularity of Finance as a major ruled the era and by 1985 the subject of Economics attracted them.  In 1995 just before the emergence of internet technology the most popular majors were Biological Sciences and Human Biology with the third spot given to Economics.   Now the latest statistics released from the university’s engineering school revealed that Computer Science is the most popular major at Stanford.
