Cloud Computing and Its Emerging Specialized Job Market

Cloud Computing is touted as the next big thing by technology companies and for a reason. It is not only changing the nature of jobs within the Information Technology department of companies, but also in other functions of an organization.

Senior-level executives, primarily chief information officers, see the transformation as an inference of the strategic role that IT plays in shaping businesses. From a business point of view it offers a solid and reliable supporting technology.

The IT sector is one dynamic sector that keeps evolving all the time. First the advent of Outsourcing and today the rise of Cloud Computing have changed the landscape.  Organizations and IT leaders have recognized that the most feasible and cost effective solutions are ones that are built and tested elsewhere. The job of finding resources and making the best use of them; whether they come from the cloud or the company’s own data center is a key component of IT leader’s responsibilities. A recent survey of 685 CIO’s revealed; more than 54% believe adopting Cloud Computing has given them more time to focus on business strategy and innovation. Around 71% who have taken up Cloud Computing believe it would be a stepping stone to pursue other management roles.

A huge part of the challenge going forward is to have the kind of people with the skills and the specialization to make it work. The ability to take the next step in Cloud Computing is going to depend on people who understand the current process and are willing to innovate.

Such a trend will see a dearth of such talent and also brings a huge demand for managers and professionals with specialized skills. The emergence will see the gap bridged between IT and other business functions. Kevin Daley of IBM and vice-chair of The Open Group Business Forum, says “Cloud will help increase the speed of development and change. The business architect will be called upon to ensure the strategic relevancy of transformation in a repeatable fashion as cycle times and rollouts happen faster.”

Such a paradigm shift is going to lead to newer job titles and responsibilities in Cloud Computing and let’s take a look at a few of them who will be in demand in the years to come. Cloud Specialists, Cloud Computing Architects, Systems Engineer – Cloud Computing, Lead Software Developer – Cloud Computing Focused, Cloud Architect – Infrastructure, Cloud Alliance Manager and Virtualization & Cloud Computing Subject Matter Experts will all be a huge part of the process and their designations will depend on the level of expertise and experience that they have in the domain of Cloud Computing.
