Formula 1 will never be a huge phenomenon in the United States says Bernie Ecclestone

Formula one’s top man Bernie Ecclestone has revealed that, the motorsport will never be big in America.

Formula 1 is expected to return to the United States with a proposed race in Texas in 2012. There is also a second race in the offing from 2013 in New Jersey.

“The US has been slow to get F1 because they want to see a profit before they start.” Ecclestone, told Al Jazeera English. He also disclosed information about a possible race in South Africa from 2013. Ecclestone, 81 also expects the Bahrain Grand Prix to be back on track this year after the 2011 edition was a no-go.

“Formula 1 will not be big in America. But Formula 1 will be in Russia for 2014, and in South Africa by 2013 even.” He said in an interview with esteemed broadcaster Sir David Frost.

It is interesting to note that a Grand Prix has not been held in South Africa since 1993. On the other hand, a Grand Prix will be held in Russia for the first time ever in 2014; the landmark deal was agreed upon last year.

The top honchos of Formula 1 have announced an unchanged calendar for the upcoming year, with Australia kicking off the season which ends with a race in Brazil. The announcement comes as a surprise amidst rumors of the continuing cloud over races to be held in US and Bahrain. Despite financial restrains, it is now clear that the US Grand Prix will take place on a new track in Austin, Texas. The proposed second race in the US will be held in New Jersey from 2013 for a period of ten years.

Doubts about the Bahrain Grand Prix persist due to the continuing civil unrest in Bahrain. The 2011 Bahrain Grand Prix was cancelled due to the same unrest which saw more than 40 people being killed. However, Ecclestone sounded confident and upbeat when he said, “We’re happy to go there if we are invited, we’ll be delighted.”
