Four Mexican World Cup Greats

Mexico has a great track record of qualifying for the World Cup finals and has put in some memorable performances over the years. In-spite of being constantly over shadowed by their illustrious South American neighbors Brazil and Argentina; they have punched above their weight and earned respect. In honor of such a great footballing legacy, let us today honor 4 top World Cup performers for Mexico, the criteria could be anything from a single performance to performance in a tournament or years and decades of excellence, as long as it’s great.

Antonio Carbajal, (1950, 1954, 1958, 1962, 1966)

Shot stopper Antonio Carbajal was probably the greatest goalkeeper Mexico ever had. He was one of the few men in the history of the game to feature in five consecutive World Cups. Nicknamed El Cinco Copas, Carbajal dominated the CONCAF scene. During the four qualifying campaigns, he had an amazing record – he conceded only 9 goals while he kept a record 16 clean sheets. It was a pity that he could not be part of the World Cup in 1970, when it was played in Mexico- he was 41 by then.

Jared Borgetti, (2002, 2006)

Borgetti holds the record for being Mexico’s all-time highest International scorer with 46 goals. Known to be a fierce header of the ball, Borgetti bought his A game in his two appearances against USA in 2001. He headed home the lone goal in the game against the US on July, 2001. In the return game against the same opposition, Mexico was in a do-or-die situation needing the win badly. Borgetti, duly obliged, once again with his precision heading scored two goals and took his team to a 2-1 victory.

Salvador Reyes, Mexico (1958, 1962, 1966)

Senor Reyes was the scourge of the US- having knocked them out of the World Cup qualifiers on three different occasions in 1958, 1962, and 1962. He scored a total of 14 goals out of which seven were against the Americans.

Francisco Javier Cruz (1994)

This man finds a place in this list for the one goal he scored that took Mexico into the 1994 World Cup in America. His goal gave El Tri a 2-1 win against Canada and saved them from the embarrassment of not making the games held just across the border.
