Green Tea Fights Ageing

A Japanese study has found an additional advantage of drinking green tea. The antioxidants in green tea help the elderly stay more agile and independent than people who do not drink green tea.

This new study that has been published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition looked at the incidence of frailty and disability amongst the elderly that consume green tea. This study was conducted by Yasutake Tomata from Tohuku University Graduate School of Medicine in Japan and involved 14,000 subjects who were 65 years old or older. The study followed the subjects over a period of three years and studied their likelihood of developing functional disabilities and problems with performing daily activities such as dressing or bathing.

The study found that the usual incidence of functional disability among the elderly who consumed one or less cups of green tea was about 13 percent, while the incidence among the elderly who drank five or more cups was 7 percent only. This is a significant decrease and it is felt that Green tea consumption is associated with a lower risk of functional disability amongst the elderly. People who drank about three or four cups a day had on average about 25 percent lower chance of developing these disabilities.

Other factors that could affect this result were that people who drank a lot of green tea were on the whole also following a healthier lifestyle, with a diet which included more fish, vegetables and fruits; they smoked less, were more educated, had fewer hear attacks, and were more mentally alert. They were more social and had a larger group of friends and family to rely on.

There have been many studies that have focused on the many health benefits of green tea; with research being conducted on the effect of the antioxidants in green tea on everything from cholesterol levels to cancer risk. It has been found that green tea extracts seem to improve leg muscle strength in older women. Green tea extracts are safe to consume in small amounts, but they do contain caffeine and small amounts of vitamin K that could interfere with medication that prevent blood clotting.
