Hunger Games sweeps 2012 MTV movie awards

The cast of The Hunger Games carried home four golden popcorn awards from this year’s MTV movie awards, which turned out to be surprisingly tame. Josh Hutcherson won the best male performance while Jennifer Lawrence and Elizabeth Banks won best female performer and best transformation respectively – and the fourth award? The best fight award to Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson Vs Alexander Ludwig.

What did not surprise the world is Twilight’s movie of the year win. After three years, it was only expected. Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part-I very comfortably beat The Hunger Games and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. The movie of the year award is based on the votes cast by the audience throughout the show.

Not just romance and drama were celebrated. Bridesmaids won two awards for Melissa McCarthy’s best comedic performance the leading ladies’ gut wrenching performance in the food poisoning scene. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 managed to steal two awards under the best cast and best hero categories.

Host Russell Brand made sure he didn’t get lost in all the craziness. He bought his own share to the stage. He tried to crack up the audience with jokes about his very short lived marriage to singer Katy Perry. He did try to get serious by thanking Kim Kardashian for ‘taking the pressure off’ him with her even shorter marriage and announced that he is now looking for his next wife. Jokes on marriages did not keep him from poking fun at Charlie Sheen, John Travolta, Justin Beiber and Kanye West.

In the comparatively serious part of the show, Christian Bale gave an emotional introduction to an exclusive trailer of The Dark Knight Rises along with Heath Ledger’s joker footage from the previous movie. Johnny Depp was given the generation award for the career he has had spanning over three decades.

Johnny Depp went on to rock the show, jamming with The Black keys playing Gold on the Ceiling and Lonely Boys.

Other awards that are exclusive to this award show such as the best dirt bag and best trailblazer were won by Jennifer Aniston for her performance in Horrible Bosses and Emma Stone for her upcoming movie The Amazing Spiderman. In all it was an eventful night that turned out be a lot less outrageous that what was expected of it.
