Jolie, the new special envoy for UNHCR

Angelina Jolie, the successful Hollywood actress is now a special envoy for large scale crises where a large number of people flee their country. She has been a goodwill ambassador for ten years now for the U.N High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

With this new role, she will be able to deal with crises from different countries including Afghanistan and Somalia where people from those countries have fled to the neighboring country due to lack of a political solution. UNHCR is quite excited about having Jolie in an extended role, according to their spokes person. She almost became the Special Representative on the Afghan Refugee crisis last year but it fell through because there was no final agreement.

She expected to deal with crises that involve large scale displacement of people and to represent UHNCR effectively. She will be helping in enforcing human laws and communication between governments.

Adrian Edwards, the spokesperson of UNHCR said “Quite honestly, I don’t think you need a rocket scientist to see the benefits that she is bringing in terms of the attention that she’s getting for the plight of the world’s displaced.”  This all began when Jolie went to Cambodia to shoot for her film Tomb Raider in 2000. She got very interested in humanitarian affairs.

She approached UNICEF for an ambassador role to help women and children. But they found her too edgy. UNHCR said that Jolie has visited more than 20 countries made about 40 field visits. She has made field visits to Afghanistan, Bosnia, Sudan, Haiti, Iran and many more. She has helped build schools in Afghanistan and Kenya by donating $5 million.

Last year she visited the border between Tunisia and Libya and met African immigrants other who fled the war. She also visited Lampedusa, the Italian island with Gutierrez to offer support to the migrants who escaped from Libya. Jolie herself has said that she finds these experiences moving and heartbreaking. But she always finds them rewarding and unforgettable.

Jolie with her actor boyfriend Brad Pitt has 6 children. Three of them are adopted from Cambodia, Ethiopia and Vietnam. She recently got engaged to him.
