Naomi Watts to Play Princess Diana in Biopic

Naomi Watts is all set to grace the silver-screen as Princess Diana in the upcoming biopic titled “Caught in Flight”. The movie reportedly covers at least the last two years of her life and would look deep into her relationship with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan. The film is also set to take inspiration from the book, Diana: Closely Guarded Secret. The book was written by protection officer, Inspector Ken Wharfe who gives us a first-hand look into the checkered life of Princess Diana.

The movie will be directed Oliver Hirschbiegel, who gave us the compelling drama ‘Downfall’ in 2004, the movie that looked in to the sunset years of Adolf Hitler. The movie was critically acclaimed and garnered wide spread attention; it also went on to be nominated for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film of the Year category. British company Ecosse Films will produce the movie that in the words of the director was described as “a compelling portrait of Diana, Princess of Wales during the last two years of her life”. “I am delighted to have such a truly exceptional actress who embodies the warmth, humanity and empathy of such a global icon as Princess Diana.” He also added

The screenplay of the movie will be will be penned by famed play writer Stephen Jeffreys. Ewan McGregor is believed to be playing the role of Inspector Ken Wharfe from whose point of view the movie will be narrated.

Naomi Watts had to overcome stiff competition from the likes of Charlize Theron, Jessica Chastain and Carey Mulligan to bag the coveted role. “It is such an honor to be able to play this iconic role,” she said in a statement. “Princess Diana was loved across the world, and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen.”

At this juncture it is fair to point out the warm reception meted out to movies about royalty; the likes of ‘The Queen’ and ‘The King’s Speech’ have been received well in the past. The movie will also continue the trend of biopics set off by The Iron Lady and My Week with Marilyn. Meryl Streep played her part as Margaret Thatcher to perfection in The Iron Lady, while Michelle Williams gave us a graceful look of the evergreen Marilyn Monroe. Let’s hope Naomi Watts can do justice to the charismatic and effervescent person that Princess Diana was.
