Rosol defeats Nadal

Rafael Nadal has suffered a shock exit at Wimbledon in the second round. He was defeated by Lukas Rosol. However, the 11-time Grand Slam winner said that he’s happy with his form this year. World number 100 Lukas Rosol defeated Nadal in a remarkable match on Thursday evening at Center Court.

The 26year old Czech player hails from Brno, the second largest city in the Czech Republic. Nadal lost 6-7 (9-11) 6-4 6-4 2-6 6-4 to Rosol in the second round. Nadal, also 26, had gone into the tournament after winning a seventh French Open title. After the loss he said, “You win, you lose. The last four months were probably the best of my career. I just played an inspired opponent.” Rosol took a 2-1 lead but Nadal appeared to regain control of the match in the fourth set which he won to take the competition into a decider. But the decision to close the roof of the center court affected his momentum and he finally succumbed to Rosol’s big hitting. He added later, “For sure [the decision to close the roof] wasn’t the best one for me but that’s what it was and I accept it, I accept that he came back and played unbelievable in the fifth. I was playing well in the fourth set and sure the stop didn’t help me, but that’s the sport.”

This was Nadal’s earliest exit in the majors since he was ousted in the same stage in Wimbledon 2005 by Gilles Muller of Luxembourg. Nadal plans to return after a little break in order to rest and recuperate to Wimbledon next month in a bid to get the gold medal at London 2012. He said in a statement, “I feel very well mentally but physically I need to rest, I played for the last six months almost every match possible in the tournaments that I played, so physically I need to stop a little bit.” Meanwhile, Rosol who had not got past the third round of a Grand Slam was surprised at his victory and said, “I don’t know what to say. I’m not just surprised but it’s like a miracle. I never expected something like this. There are so many emotions – I don’t know what to say. [Nadal] is a superstar and I’m very sorry for him. I played unbelievably today. I hope I can play another match like this.” Throughout the contest Rosol was undeterred and continued to go for his shots and holding on to win with some tremendous hitting.
