Spain Thrash Italy to Win Euro 2012

They were called boring, people said they were tired and jaded after a grueling season, some even said they were not even close to playing their best football – Spain had nothing to say but to win the most coveted football prize in Europe to shut everybody up. Spain won the final 4-0 with goals from David Silva, Jordi Alba, Fernando Torres and Juan Mata.

The European Football Championship held in Ukraine and Poland came to a climax last Sunday with two much fancied teams in Italy and Spain battling for top honors. Spain came into the game as favorites, but Italy’s spirited win in the semi-finals against favorites Germany meant Spain were going to be stretched. As it turned out, it was the Italians who were stretched to the maximum – they couldn’t wait for the final whistle to put an end to their misery.

To be honest, it was a day of barren luck for the Italians who had to make a substitution halfway through the first half due to injury. They made two more substitutions early in the second half. When Thiago Motta was stretchered off the field in the 62nd minute, there was no way back for the Italians, having to play 30 minutes with 10 men against the marauding World Champions.

The Spanish were a jubilant side having won three major competitions in a row and became the first football nation to win the European Championship twice in a row. The team famous for its ‘tiki-taka’ style of passing football, which is completely based on ball possession came under fire for their style and were branded boring. Not to be overawed by anybody, the team stuck to their philosophy and came up trumps.

The team from being branded boring are now being hailed as probably the greatest ever team to have played the game putting them on the same pedestal as the all-conquering Brazilian side of the 70’s and the 80’s. Going by the age and the ability in this Spanish side, the Euro trophy lifted by their captain Iker Casillas is definitely not the last major international trophy that he will ever raise.

Come, 2014 in Brazil, the Spanish Armada will again be there in full force to conquer the World, all over again.
