Rooney tipped to break Sir Bobby Charlton’s Manchester United all-time goal scoring record

Sir Alex Ferguson, the manager of Football club Manchester United has backed Wayne Rooney to go all the way and beat Sir Bobby Charlton’s all-time goal scoring record for Manchester United.

Sir Bobby scored 249 goals in his 17 year old association with United; many people at the time believed none could ever eclipse the record. Today, Wayne Rooney stands at 178 at fourth place just one behind George Best and Dennis Viollet. At 26, he is just 71 goals behind the great Charlton; one would assume it would just be a matter of time.

Ruud Vaan Nistelroy, the Dutch striker who had a rich haul at Manchester United scored a whopping 150 goals in five years. Sir Alex feels there is nothing that is stopping Wayne Rooney from becoming the greatest ever to play for Manchester United. “He has time on his side to beat all types of records,” said Ferguson. “There is every chance of beating Bobby’s record. He is on track to beat it and I am sure he will do it.”
