US Appeals to the World Community to maintain pressure on Iran

The US feels that the best way to prevent Iran’s nuclear weapon aspirations is to keep it under pressure through globally supported tough economic sanctions, though US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta did not a military response as a last recourse while speaking with Airmen in Germany.

Mr. Panetta was responding to speculation about Israel or the US’s possible military strikes against suspected nuclear facilities in Iran. Iran has long been developing nuclear capabilities and has always claimed that these were for peaceful purposes such as nuclear power. In November 2011 the IAEA published a report stating that it now feels that Iran is performing research and experiments that are geared towards developing Nuclear weapons capability. Its report details the country’s detonator development, the multiple-point initiation of high explosives, and experiments involving nuclear payload integration into a missile delivery vehicle. Iran on its part has accused the IAEA of pro western bias and has said that it will reduce cooperation with it in future.

Though Iran is an oil producing country, the Government has stated that it would rather not burn this oil or gas for electricity and instead use Nuclear power to light its cities and meet its power needs. The idea that Iran which has been antagonistic towards the west from the 70’s , would want to develop nuclear weapons is not farfetched  and the bad blood between this Islamic country and Israel is also quite well known.

But after the terrible loss of face and global support that the US faced by going into Iraq singlehandedly with unsubstantiated intelligence, this time around they are working within a global framework of sanctions and will hopefully only take the military option with the worlds backing if such a situation were to arise.
